Assalamualaikum. Please read this before you proceed. Below are my notes compiled from the Video of Ustad Tim Humble and Abu Ibrahim Husnayn from the Videos suggested to be watched before attending the Ruqya Workshop at Kalemah.

Part 1 tp Part 5 are notes from the Videos I watched and Part 6 onwards starts the Ruqya Workshop Notes. In order to understand them it is better to read from the beginning to get a complete idea about this subject insha’Allah. I hope these notes will be of benefit to you insha’Allah

Virtues of reciting Ayatul Kursi: Shaytan came in the form of a man to Abu Hurayrah and told about this Ayah in a hadith:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ordered me to guard the Zakat revenue of Ramadan. Then somebody came to me and started stealing from the foodstuff. I caught him and said, “I will take you to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)!” Then Abu Huraira described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), “(Please don’t take me to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you.) When you go to your bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi, (2.255) for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn.” (When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard the story) he said (to me), “He (who came to you at night) told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Satan.”

Weakness of Shaytan

  • Plot of shaytan is weak
  • Taqwa
  • Belief in Tawheed are a means of protection

Shaytan fears some people

  • Umar (r.a) [ due to his taqwa and Iman]
  • Being on path of Salaf us Salih
  • Tawakkul
  • Cannot enter locked door and on whose Allah’s name has been mentioned
  • Some Jinn listened to the prophet ﷺ and accepted Islam (Jinn have different religions)

Seeking aid from good Jinn

  • Never did prophet ﷺ sought aid from good jinn
  • How do you know that the jinn is even a muslim
  • May lead to shirk
  • If during ruqya, good jinn offer to help- continue with your work

Jinn possession

  • They can possess an individual
  • Surah Baqarah (about Riba)

Those who eat Ribâ[] (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaitân (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: “Trading is only like Ribâ (usury),” whereas Allâh has permitted trading and forbidden Ribâ (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Ribâ (usury) shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allâh (to judge); but whoever returns [to Ribâ (usury)], such are the dwellers of the Fire – they will abide therein (275) Allâh will destroy Ribâ (usury) and will give increase for Sadaqât (deeds of charity, alms, etc.) And Allâh likes not the disbelievers, sinners. (276) Truly those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and give Zakât, they will have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. (277) O you who believe! Be afraid of Allâh and give up what remains (due to you) from Ribâ (usury) (from now onward), if you are (really) believers[]. (278) And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allâh and His Messenger[] but if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly (by asking more than your capital sums), and you shall not be dealt with unjustly (by receiving less than your capital sums). (279) And if the debtor is in a hard time (has no money), then grant him time till it is easy for him to repay, but if you remit it by way of charity, that is better for you if you did but know.[] (280) And be afraid of the Day when you shall be brought back to Allâh. Then every person shall be paid what he earned, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly. (281)

The Prophet said, ‘Shaytan flows in the son of Adam like blood flows.'”

Ijma of scholars: Ibn Taymiyyah “Shaytan can possess…”

  • Vulnerable when heedless
  • Extremes of happiness, worry or grief
  • Places of filth, isolation, graveyard, caves, under trees (do not urinate under them)

Why does possession occur?

  • As revenge (if harmed)
  • Out of love
  • Sent by magician

Common Signs of Jinn possession

*not every person who displays these signs is possessed

  • Split personality: sudden change in personality, for no apparent reason
  • Change in facial structure or voice
  • Sudden displays of extreme emotions when Qur’an is recited

Tell tale signs

  • Aversion for recitation to Qur’an or Athan
  • Sudden unexplainable illness
  • Complains of ants crawling over their body
  • Compression in the chest, difficulty breathing
  • Epilepsy, fits, fainting (out of the blue)
  • Like to be in places of filth
  • Night walking
  • Feel peace in graveyard
  • Extreme increase in physical strength (need few people to hold them down)

Link between jinn and magician

  • It is a relationship of ‘ mutual loss’
  • Shaytan want to be honoured
  • The more magician stoops the more willing the jinn helps
  • Iblis is the head

What jinn want?

They want sahir to humiliate himself. If sahir does not call other to do shirk then jinn will not work for him.

Things asked: DOB, mother’s name, clothes, hair, picture, scent used to identify the person

  1. Do muslim jinn possess people?

– maybe through revenge

Through sihr- sometimes they are sent against their will- king is called- sent full soldiers- jinn is captured

Note: Before we kill the jinn we give the opportunity to leave

Virtues of Hijamah

  • A bulb like is seen moving in the vein
  • Sometimes the jinn is removed in hijamah

[Al Imran: 175] Don’t fear Jinn. Fear Allah

It is only Shaitân (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliyâ’ [supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh and in His Messenger, Muhammad SAW)], so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers. (175)

  • If one of the house member is not practicing fear Allah as much as possible.
  • If you can’t force someone to practice the Sunnah at-least you do
  • Remove photos from your room
  • Do the best you can do

History of Magic

1st Civilization: people of Baabil (babylyon)- today it is Iraq

  • Had very specific form of magic
  • 7 stars : worship of them
  • 3 things they used to come closer to their gods
  • Al abkhirah: bukhoor
  • Al uqad: knots
  • sacrificing animals to the stars
  • They are well known for writing about their magic

  • Known for written magic
  • Hieroglyphics
  • Talismans
  • Priesthood being magicians
  • Some kings themselves practiced magic

Sihr ul taqleel- magic that involves illusion by using Jinn [kaafir]

Sha’vada- illusionary magic eg: card tricks etc. [ not kaafir]

  • Originally upon tawheed
  • Rustum- leaders of Persians- started looking at astrology
  • Every magician of modern day world will use Islam in their magic- any religion will use it- it is made worse- more disgraceful by integrating Islam- letters, symbols & talismans
  • Now based in Arabic primarily
  • They disgrace the Qur’an by using words of Qur’an in their magic

People of innovation started from Shia & Sufis

What is magic?

Sihr: something that is concealed from sight caused by hidden forces

Ruqya                                   Uqad                                                     Tama’im

(linguistically)                    knots (tied/ blown on)                   on which words are written “amulets”

Words are Majority

Magic is simply a contract/ agreement with a Jinn.

  • Both fear each other, other than Allah
  • Principle: no magic happens without making an offering to the Jinn eg: words, sajda , sacrifice

Magic in light of the Qur’an

[102: Surah Baqarah]

They followed what the Shayâtin (devils) gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaimân (Solomon). Sulaimân did not disbelieve, but the Shayâtin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two (angels,) Hârût and Mârût, but neither of these two angels taught anyone (such things) till they had said, “We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us).” And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allâh’s Leave. And they learn that which harms them and profits them not. And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their ownselves, if they but knew. (102)

  • Magic is something that can be learnt i.e. it is knowledge
  • Magic is an act of disbelief
  • Magic causes real harm
  • There is no harm except by the will of Allah
  • There is no good magic

[story of Musa in Qur’an]

[Surah Taha 65-69]

They said:”O Mûsa (Moses)! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw?” (65) [Mûsa (Moses)] said: “Nay, throw you (first)!” Then behold, their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast. (66) So Mûsa (Moses) conceived fear in himself. (67) We (Allâh) said: “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. (68) “And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never be successful, to whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.” (69)

Status of the magician is very humiliating

Magic in Sunnah

We believe that prophet ﷺ was afflicted by Sihr. He was afflicted to show the ummah what should be done.

Mishwa mishata- sihr from his hair (Anyone else would die from this) but prophet ﷺ  forgot what he did.

Labeed bn A’sam did sihr on prophet ﷺ

Magician should be executed by the sword

Nature of the Sahir

  • Principles: A person cannot become a magician until he reaches the highest levels of disbelief
  • Shayateen lure magician with certain things
    • Fame
    • Wealth
    • Women
  • One of the reasons we do not seek help from good Jinn
  • A magician hardly sleeps even though he prays 5 times and has a beard
  • Via desecration of the Qur’an he becomes a magician
  • Throw in sewer
  • For cleaning himself
  • The more power a Sahir wants the more frequently they do these things
  • They will make their followers do mockery of Salah i.e. pray without wudu.
  • Contract: Done in the form of amulet (taweez)

Other forms

  • Buried
  • Burned
  • It can be destroyed
  • Uses symbols, charts , astrology

How to ascertain?

  • Protected inside of other things
  • Also back of the bird

Purposes of magic is defined by 2 things

  • Financial gain
  • By shaytan

*This doesn’t necessarily mean you are afflicted

  • Sudden love/hatred or change in character
  • Incurable sickness which has no cause
  • not able to conceive
  • suddenly off deen

Differences between magic & jinn possession

Both involve Jinn

  • Jinn possession result as a result of magic
  • Sihr is stronger due to magic
  • Sihr is more difficult to break if you don’t know where the contract is

The Evil Eye

  • It is a kind of illness which some people have
  • It can be developed

When is it given?

2 circumstances

  • Consensus: when they feel jealous (but no every jealousy results in it)
  • When you are particularly amazed/impressed by something
  • You can give evil eye to yourself when not result to Allah ( saying masha’Allah tabarkallah )
  • Can be given to your children
  • Also when joking

Ruqya is permissible/ recommended for evil eye

Evil eye can overtake the Qadr- it is very severe- at times effect is worse than magic

  • Easier to diagnose during ruqya
  • Expecting somebody with praise worthy attribute get affected

Eg: person with beautiful recitation loses his voice

What we can do?

  • Mention the name of Allah
  • Invoke Allah for that person
  • MashaAllah tabarkallah
  • Barakallahu feekum
  • Emphatic especially if you are a person whose evil eye is given
  • Fard ain if someone comes and asks you for wudu’ water

Imam ahmed, imam nasai, sheikh ul islam (hadith): Sahl ibn hanif

  • Evil eye can affect marriage , education and so many things
  • Seek refuge in Allah, whether it leads to evil eye or not “ surah falaq”
  • It hits the one whom Allah allows it

Can a non muslim harm with the way they look at you? Yes

  • Even by hearing some news

Disease of jealousy took iblis astray

  • How do we do Ruqya
  • Difficulties and problems

Ruqya is not only Qur’an. It is purifying the heart and purifying belief. It is Raising your Iman and attaching yourself to Allah

Husain b. ‘Abd al-Rahman reported:

I was with Sa’id b. Jubair when he said: Who amongst you saw a star shooting last night? I said: It was I; then I said: I was in fact not (busy) in prayer, but was stung by a scorpion (and that is the reason why I was awake and had a glimpse of the shooting star). He said: Then what did you do? I said: I practised charm. He said: What urged you to do this? I said: (I did this according to the implied suggestion) of the hadith which al-Shu’ba narrated. He said: What did al-Shu’ba narrate to you? I said: Buraida b. Husaib al-Aslami narrated to us. The charm is of no avail except in case of the (evil influence) of an eye or the sting of a scorpion. He said: He who acted according to what he had heard (from the Holy Prophet) acted rightly, but Ibn ‘Abbas narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he said: There were brought before me the peoples and I saw an apostle and a small group (of his followers) along with him, another (apostle) and one or two persons (along with him) and (still another) apostle having no one with him. When a very large group was brought to me I conceived as if it were my Ummah. Then it was said to me: It is Moses and his people. You should look at the horizon, and I saw a very huge group. It was again said to me: See the other side of the horizon, and there was (also) a very huge group. It was said to me: This is your Ummah, and amongst them there were seventy thousand persons who would be made to enter Paradise without rendering any account and without (suffering) any torment. He then stood up and went to his house. Then the people began to talk about the people who would be admitted to Paradise without rendering any account and without (suffering) any torment. Some of them said: They may be those who (have had the good fortune of living) in the company of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and some of them said: They be those who were born in Islam and did not associate anything with Allah. Some people mentioned other things. Thereupon came forth the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) before them and he said: What was that which you were talking about? They informed him. He said: They are those persons who neither practise charm, nor ask others to practise it, nor do they take omens, and repose their trust in their Lord. Upon this ‘Ukkasha b. Mihsan stood up and said: Supplicate for me that He should make me one among them. Upon this he (Messenger of Allah) said: Thou are one among them. Then another man stood up and said: Supplicate before Allah that He should make me one among them. Upon this he said: ‘Ukkisha has preceded you.

They have complete tawakkul in Allah

  • If Jinn is stopping one from fasting or Salah then Ruqya is fard
  • Part of Iman- reducing reliance on people and relying on Allah
  • Self Ruqya is better for you in this regard
  • Self Ruqya is always better
  • Self Ruqya is a Sunnah
  • Some sahaba were known for their Ruqya
  • []
  • Practical self ruqya

Q. When do I know that I need ruqya? How do I know that my problem is medical or paranormal?

A. Ruqya is non invasive, well tolerated with no contraindications. Whenever you feel that it might be wanted there is no harm in doing it. You should read on yourself whether or not paranormal.

Prophet used to do ruqya for normal medical complaints (which usually outnumber paranormal complaints)

  • Ruqya was done to a man suffering from madness (he was not possessed)
  • Qu’an is the complete cure
  • Ruqya is one of the lasting miracles that Allah has given

Surah Al Imran

It is only Shaitân (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliyâ’ [supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh and in His Messenger, Muhammad SAW)], so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers. (175)

If ruqya is making you scared of the Jinn then there is something wrong with your heart

  • Knowledge is your first weapon against the shaytan
  • Put that knowledge into practice
  • Be continuous and patient, slow and steady
  • Don’t rush (most common mistake)
  • Never allow shaytan to lead Ruqya session
    • They becomes reactive to the shaytan
    • They start believing him
    • Have a ruqya plan
  • Read 45 minutes
  • Continue even if you feel to go to the bathroom or pain
  • You dictate the Shaytan (don’t stop when it tries to dictate you)
  • Say to it “ Faqdima antaqad” – Do whatever you want
  • They will only harm you with insignificant harms (pricks, words, pain) and its only in this Dunya
  • Get your intention right
  • Disobedience to Allah, turning away from Him, these mistakes are big obstacles to your success
  • When you sin you give an opportunity for the Jinn to control you
  • Read the duas
  • Be committed to learning proper Islamic beliefs and sunnah of prophet ﷺ
  • Purify your belief in Allah

Ruqya if not accordance with Sunnah it wont work

(above) major reasons people stop ruqya

Read full Ruqya program step by step

  • This is minimum standard
  • Strict minimum program whether self, family or clinic

(roles of Raqi is like consultant in hospital)

  • Not recommended to rely upon Raqi. Take control of your own ruqya treatment
  • Even if one is afflicted with sihr one can do ruqya on oneself
  • Many times people stop when comfort level is exceeded. Don’t be inside your comfort zone
  • Surah Imran has many lessons on Ruqya
  • Shaytan responds with full force if you just keep irritating it (give in your full effort)
  • Be a family member who can do Ruqya . Key is self- treatment

Minimum standard

  • Works for people in most circumstances
  • Patients, family and friends keep a record to know the progress
  • Progress is not always getting better but either its dead or creates havoc and then suddenly it goes (it gets worse before it gets better eg: like cancer when diagnosed and treated)

Key in ruqya is ‘Change’

  • There is no time limit if there is no reaction from the person
  • Read until the symptoms go away even if seeking medical treatment
  • Raqi doing on someone- not advisable
  • If there is no reaction for many days read on yourself
  • Ideal ruqya case- where there is frequent change
  • Keep a brief diary

Pre-condition for treatment

Ruq’ya is dawah & naseeha

  • Every ruqya session should begin with Da’wah, naseeha or Islah
  • Patient directs their worship of Allah alone [Tawheed] and leave [Shirk]

(what to ask the patient)

  • Tell about yourself
  • (maybe) which masjid
  • Who do you listen to
  • Recognizing that there is no cure except from Allah (stop believing that he/she will solve the problem)
  • Patient is strict in following the Sunnah
  • Patient is not in possession of Ta’weez (*how to destroy ta’weez* )
  • Patient gets rid of everything pleasing to the shaytan
  • Fear Allah as much as you can if you can’t control
  • Pray 5 times a day  if not then they have removed the protection of Allah “seek help in patience and prayer”

Daily tasks

How each protect

  • Bismillah before entering house and eating food
  • Does not cause harm
  • Suffice you in everything
  • Nothing between you & paradise except death
  • Allah will send a protector before sleep
  • Protected against male female shaytaan
  • Angels say “defended, protected and guided , protected from shaytan
  • Nothing will harm until you leave
  • Nothing will harm you day & night

Read Hisnul Muslim

Patient must read Qu’ran at least 45 minutes (2 or 3 times a day)

9 ways of doing Ruqya

  • Reading qur’an alone- no blowing or spitting
  • Reading & blowing with dry air

  • Dua & Azkar- heart is engaged along with tongue and limbs get engaged as well
  • Recitation of Qu’ran (greater form of protection)(One of the types of abandoning Qur’an is not using it for Ruqya)
  • Keep windows & doors closed between maghrib & isha
  • If you feel your are affected by something- treat it quickly
  • Eat 7 dates in early morning (if a patient – they should be observed)

    • If not , then Ajwa from anywhere in Madina

A patient must never use Ta’weez or go to a magician

How to get Started (Click here for details)

If I could do only one thing  then :

  • Read Dua “ Bismillahilladhi…”
  • Ghalabatidd daini wa ….

  • Shaytan builds upon what is available in the person’s Nafs
  • Nafs is constantly inclined towards evil
  • Difficult situation for Raqi is when patient refuses
  • Recognise that help only comes from Allah
    • Dua
    • Tawba
    • Tahajjud

Obstacle in Ruqya

Obstacle 1: If patient refuses

  • Try to encourage them & advice them
  • Sometimes it is better not to tell about Ruqya
  • Don’t limit your encouragement to Ruqya alone
  • Help them in attaching to Allah, pray & recite Qur’an
    • Action & belief comes together
  • Remove traditional misconception
    • Sadaqa, etc.

Obstacle 2: Why is my treatment taking so long?

  • Most people have wrong expectations
  • How do I know my treatment is Complete?
  • When no further symptoms persists and the patient is blessed with complete relief
  • Happens in phases

Important points

  • Do not stop Ruqya
  • It may be a partly cured
  • 1 month of complete Ruqya at same level
  • 1 clear month of no symptoms with same level of ruqya
    • It may leave and keep latent one
    • It may play dead and fool the raqi
    • Evil eye remains
    • May come back again
  • Different phases mean different modes of attack happens
  • Once problem is gone the person remains vulnerable
  • They should be willing to full treatment at first relapse
